TMD / TMJ Treatment in Oklahoma City

Pain in your jaw could be a sign of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). During a visit to our office, Dr. Grace can diagnose and discuss treatment options for you.

What are TMD & TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is what connects your lower jaw to your skull at the temporal bone. This joint is responsible for a number of jaw functions, including chewing. If that joint is causing you pain you may have temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD).

What are the symptoms of TMD?

Difficulty chewing

Pain when closing and opening mouth

Frequent headaches

Ear pain

Lockjaw

Grinding teeth

Popping or clicking sounds when opening your mouth

Ringing in ears

How is TMD treated?

In the short term, the use of hot and cold compresses can reduce pain at the joint, but if pain persists further treatment may be necessary.

Dr. Grace relieves pain through equilibrating your bite, so to give you proper force distribution when your teeth come together. We address not just the TMJ but all of the other factors that can impact the jaw and misalignment. We'll temporarily relieve TMJ pain with botox and through laser therapy.

If Dr. Grace notices an unnatural bite that could be leading to TMJ pain, she will come up with a plan to treat your specific condition. This could include restoring deteriorating teeth that may be affecting the bite with dental implants, creating a customized mouthguard to relieve pain and reduce clenching/grinding of teeth, or using orthodontics to correct crooked teeth that may be impacting your bite.

Patients with TMD are also recommended to try and avoid tough foods that are difficult to chew, along with utilizing regular hot and cold packs. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also be effective in minimizing the pain caused by TMD.
